Further Schooling

Open Question:

If you had sufficient time to devote to full-time graduate school, or just full-time study in the Gentleman Scholar type of framework, what would you study? We are assuming here that you haven’t burned yourself out already on, or sworn a blood oath about avoiding, advanced academic degrees.

I think I’d have to go for history. Probably something technology-centric. I really don’t have any desire to go back to school to specialize my technical skills any more than they already are.

You?

I actually have several possible areas I’d be willing to go back for – some for degrees, others just to learn.

    1. Marketing – this is a degree worthy goal; and a track I’d probably take if I get seriously bummed out by academia.

    2. Animal/Human Biology – more just to learn.

    3. Medicine – more just to learn; my interests are too broad to decide on just one field of study for a degree or career.

I’d probably go for an MFA in music composition. My friend Al (an accomplished composer himself) says just to write, and learn as you go. But a school can get your works performed. I’d also have to become a better pianist to make this happen, so include the requisite piano classes as well.

I’m also interested in learning a foreign language well (French, German, or Dutch preferably). Rather than taking classes, money and time are probably better spent gaining fluency by relocating abroad for a while.

Probably something in creative media – photography or writing come to mind.

Otherwise I might join you with those history endeavors, I’ve always been interested in the Napoleonic era and the dawn of the industrial revolution (say 19th century in general).

There’s just so little room in the modern world for the sort of general philosopher/polymath.

As for another degree I’d got for a law degree (with a focus on copyright and new media) or a MBA. But those are not my “gentleman” scholar pursuits. I;m not sure I have any. Maybe art. It’s hard to think of things not link in some way to my current degrees. Perhaps music because I know so little. Or fashion design, always an interest of mine.

My top 3 right now would be:

    1. Astronomy
    2. History
    3. Psychology
