Hugghahadabuggahda…

I am a purveyor of scienceblogs.com because they contain a lot of useful and interesting information.

Not that this isn’t useful or interesting, but it hurts my brain…

I don’t really get the point of programming languages like this, because they don’t do anything useful. I can write the exact same thing in perl or Java and have it be obvious what it does (okay, maybe not necessarily in perl, but at least it’ll be FAIRLY obvious.

Yes, the program will be more bytes. Yes, I may even have to (gasp) comment lines to make them more readable. But I believe that code should be self-documenting, so that variable names and method names explain what the object stores/does, and there should be little confusion as to what a block does, even if a straight-out-of-college programmer is looking at it for the first time. This isn’t always possible, but at least it’s a goal.

Unfortunately, programmers have the same level of machismo as athletes (except that it’s intellectual vs. physical machismo) so there’s a certain amount of you-can’t-read-my-code-so-therefore-I’m smarter-than-you that goes on in these exercises.

Oh, and if you want a really messed-up language, behold:

    Whitespace

I found this one a couple years ago and those neurons fired again when reading about BF and Befunge.

I believe that this dude studies programming languages to develop new, better ones.

I would be more verbose with this response, but I am in the middle of teaching myself the Dvorak keyboard, and right now it is torture…
