I unboxed my new camera today. It is the replacement to my three-plus year-old Canon Digital Rebel XT. The Rebel has been great, but it’s showing it’s age, plus I wanted to upgrade. If you click through, you’ll go to my flickr set that has the unboxing.

I didn’t realize how much smaller the Rebels were until you put them next to each other. I’ve used both by 20D and a Rebel at a shoot before, but that picture really highlights it.
It looks like the 50D uses the same battery pack as the other x0Ds, BP-511(A). You’ll have to let me know how you like the battery grip. It’s been one of those items I’ve considered getting for a while, but it’s never quite pushed over the top. Lenses always seem to get the nod instead.
The other major change in controls is the shooting selector moving to the left side. As you will find, having the bottle-cap thumb dial and the sprocket finger dial makes aperture setup a lot faster.
Enjoy!

I plan to! This camera is quite a bit larger than the rebel. And heavier. The battery pack makes it even larger and heavier. I’m thinking I won’t keep the battery pack installed constantly as was my first inclination; it makes the whole kit too unwieldy.
It’s going out for a field trial tomorrow. I’ll let you know how it goes.
