Because Phil Plait Did It

Phil Plait did it, so I have to do it, too.

How long could you survive in the vacuum of space?

According to the quiz, you’ll survive longer in a vacuum if you take a deep breath as you go out the airlock. In retrospect, I guess this makes good sense. I’d always thought that taking a deep breath would doom you to ruptured lungs, etc., which I guess is still true, but if you don’t get pulled back inside your spacecraft, that’s irrelevant. The extra breath will allow you to maintain consciousness a bit longer than not taking one and if your final moments are as, ummmm, unique as being expelled from an airlock would be, the additional few seconds will allow you to at least compose a blog post in your head.
